Choose the Right Service for Your Needs

Before choosing an editor or proofreader, it’s vital to assess your project’s needs. Most editorial professionals have honed their skills in specific areas, so you want to choose one who is knowledgeable in the particular service you’re seeking.

My expertise lies in sentence-level editing, which is perfect for those who are content with their document’s overall structure but need support in refining their text. In addition, I have specialized knowledge in proofreading legal transcripts and evaluating picture books.

To ensure transparency, I’ve outlined exactly what you can expect from each of my editorial services. If you’re still feeling unsure about which type of editing suits your needs, take advantage of my complimentary sample edits to receive personalized recommendations. (Please be aware that sample edits are not offered for transcript proofreading and picture book packages, as these services have set rates.)

Copyediting

Starting at $0.02 a word

($20 per 1,000 words)

Copyediting addresses the technical aspects of writing to achieve a polished and professional product. The primary goal in copyediting is to maintain accuracy, clarity, and consistency, ensuring readers remain focused on your message. Here’s a breakdown of what my copyediting service includes:

  • Mechanical Edits
Addressing grammar, spelling, punctuation, and typographical errors

  • Language Edits
Revising misused words and phrases and ensuring bias-free language

  • Clarity Support
Identifying unclear sections and offering simple revisions

  • Styling Consistency
Maintaining uniformity in capitalization, hyphenation, abbreviations, and numbers

  • Fact-Checking
Verifying factual details, such as names, dates, places, and URLs

In the absence of a preferred style guide, I default to The Chicago Manual of Style, but I can work with other manuals or house style guides as needed.

Line Editing

Starting at $0.03 a word

($30 per 1,000 words)

In line editing, my focus is on improving the overall style and flow of your writing. I’ll carefully analyze your text line by line to ensure it is easy to read and suitable for your target audience. Because line editing and copyediting are often done together, my line editing service includes all the features of my copyediting service along with the following:

  • Readability Edits
Promoting flow by clarifying ambiguous passages and incorporating linking phrases

  • Conciseness and Precision
Revising wordy passages, eliminating jargon, and removing redundancy

  • Tone Adjustment
Keeping your tone and style consistent and tailored to your intended readership

  • Structural Refinement
Restructuring and reorganizing sentences to aid clarity and address gaps in logic

  • Stylistic Enhancement
Identifying and offering suggestions for weak verbs, clichés, and overuse of the passive voice

I take a more assertive approach when line editing than I do when simply copyediting, as my aim is to tighten your prose and smooth out any rough edges. However, I always strive to preserve your unique authorial voice and can tailor my touch to your preferences.

Proofreading

Starting at $0.015 a word

($15 per 1,000 words)

The final step in the editing process is proofreading, which ensures the document’s overall quality and accuracy. Proofreading involves carefully examining the text to identify any mistakes or inconsistencies that may have been overlooked during earlier rounds of editing. The goal is to correct any blatant errors without making significant alterations to grammar or syntax. Here’s what’s included in my proofreading service:

  • Mechanical Correctness
Checking for lingering errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation

  • Consistent Styling
Ensuring consistency in capitalization, hyphenation, abbreviations, and numbers

  • Layout and Typography Review
Addressing issues such as inconsistent headings, spacing, and fonts

  • Visual Element Accuracy
Checking for errors in tables, figures, pictures, and captions

  • Cross-Reference Checking
Verifying that internal references direct readers to the correct page or link

Ideally, proofreading should be done by an editor who hasn’t previously worked on your document and is seeing it with fresh eyes. Sometimes, however, a service package that includes both copyediting and proofreading is worth considering, as it can be a practical option when dealing with time and budget constraints.

Transcript proofreading is a specialized service I provide exclusively for court reporters. I have tremendous respect for the critical role court reporters play in documenting legal proceedings, and my aim is to support you by providing professional service with a friendly touch.

When entrusted with proofreading your transcripts, I focus on four key areas:

  1. Providing clear and accurate annotations

  2. Customizing feedback to your preferences

  3. Ensuring prompt and reliable delivery

  4. Maintaining transcript confidentiality

My proficiency lies in handling PDF files, and I am well versed in using the following standard reference manuals:

  • Bad Grammar/Good Punctuation, by Margie Wakeman Wells

  • Morson’s English Guide for Court Reporters, by Lillian I. Morson

  • The Gregg Reference Manual, by William A. Sabin

Court reporters have a challenging job, but I’m committed to easing the pressure you face by applying my skills in grammar and research and using my keen eye for detail. My goal is to help you produce transcripts you can take pride in, while also giving you more time to relax and enjoy your favorite activities.

Critique Package

$200 flat rate for manuscripts under 1,000 words

Editing Package
$100 flat rate for manuscripts under 1,000 words

Having conducted hundreds of story times, I know what it takes for a picture book to become a cherished favorite among kids and families. My wish is for your book to have that same enduring appeal. I provide two options for picture book packages:

1. Critique Package

Includes the following services:

  • Manuscript Critique and Developmental Editing
I review the overall storyline and structure of your manuscript, assessing the plot, characters, conflict, and setting. I then provide a comprehensive analysis of what’s working well and what needs adjusting, giving specific feedback in either an editorial letter or margin comments.

  • Line Editing and Copyediting
After you finalize the structure of your story, I offer suggestions to enhance the language of your text. These suggestions consider vocabulary, rhythm, point of view, dialogue, and tone.

  • Proofreading
After the line edit and copyedit are complete, I provide a final cleanup pass on your manuscript to check for lingering grammatical errors, typos, and inconsistencies.

  • Bonus: Book Blurb Editing
I make sure the brief description on the back of your book is free from errors and serves as a captivating story hook.

2. Editing Package

  • Appropriate for manuscripts that have already undergone or do not require a developmental edit.

  • Includes all services listed under the Critique Package except for the manuscript critique and developmental editing.
